Study in Canada
About Canada
Most students prefer to study in Canada because it is the most popular and cost effective study destination for education in the world. Come study in top universities in Canada through Global Opportunities - your higher education consultant based in India.

It is not only among the top three countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, but Canada is also ranked as the number one country in the world to live in.

Wherever you choose to study in Canada, you will discover a multitude of cultural, leisure, and other activities year-round. The United Nations has declared that Canada has the highest quality of life in the world. A vast country with a variety of tourist destinations. You can enjoy the many museums, seasonal festivals, and exciting nightlife that each province and territory has to offer. Canada also has a beautiful countryside which means that most outdoor recreational activities are very popular here, whether it be skiing, cycling, hiking, camping, sightseeing, or even ice sailing.

Canadians place a premium on education and demand first-rate schools. Canada spends more per capita on its education system than any other country in the G-7 and is among the top three countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). A degree from a Canadian university is recognized world-wide and as a result, international students who graduate from top universities in Canada enjoy successful and prosperous careers.

While the quality of education is always high, every university has a style all its own: large, bustling campuses or smaller, more intimate settings; a university education in English or French; metropolitan cities or small towns. You can choose to study at large universities offering a wide range of subjects at the undergraduate or graduate levels, or at small liberal arts institutions with a focus on undergraduate education. Top universities and colleges in Canada are world-renowned for their high standards, safe campuses, and educational excellence. They are at the forefront of the information technology revolution and ensure that their students are equipped for the 21st century. Many U.S. companies actively recruit on Canadian campus.
The Canadian education system encompasses both publicly-funded and private schools.

Education institutions are not officially ranked in Canada, but the entire Canada university list offers high quality programs. When choosing your school in Canada, consider the type, size and location of the institution. If you are interested in a particular area of study, investigate which schools have more to offer in that discipline.

Education System
In Canada, education is regulated by each separate provincial government through the individual ministries of education. The ministries of education oversee smaller bodies called boards of education or district school boards (such as the Toronto District School Board) which oversee the individual schools.
There are 10 provinces and three territories, each with their own way of organizing education, but there are some generalizations that one can make about Canadian education.

Canadian Education System
Education in Canada is under the complete jurisdiction of the provinces and territories and as such, there is no federal education system in Canada. In keeping with the national commitment to education, public education in Canada is free up to and including secondary school in all the provinces. At the post-secondary level, institutions are divided into community colleges and universities.

The Canadian education system encompasses both publicly funded and private schools, from kindergarten through to university. Education is a provincial responsibility under the Canadian constitution, which means there are significant differences between the education systems of the different provinces. However, standards across the country are uniformly high.

Scholarships offered by Canadian schools

A number of Canadian universities and colleges offer scholarships and financial aid, generally based on academic merit. Check with the scholarship office of each school that is of interest to you to determine if there are entrance scholarships granted with admission for first year of study or continuing scholarships which will have requirements in place for your full course of study. Competitive scholarships often require a separate application which could take academic, financial need and extra curricular activities into account. Athletic entrance scholarships are not usually offered at Canadian colleges and universities.

Admission Procedure The basic steps for applying abroad are: 1. Identifying universities and the course of your interest 2. Request universities for application forms 3. Taking various required tests 4. Arranging and preparing essays and recommendation letters 5. Completing and sending application forms along with required documents 6. Applying for VISA after obtaining I-20 from the college

Selecting University
While selecting the right course and University keep in mind the following points:

1. Your academic grades (including achievements)
2. Test scores (GRE/GMAT/SAT/TOEFL/IELTS)
3. Your financial capacity
4. Major (Specialization) subjects that you are interested in
5. Term of entry (Fall/Summer/Spring)
6. The rank and reputation of the University
7. The student to faculty ratio of the college
8. The location of the school (Big city/Small town/Rural setup)
9. The climatic conditions (not to be stressed, unless you have health constraints)
Pre-application

A pre-application is a tentative list of schools that you would like to apply to. On the basis of your academic profile, your probable test scores and financial ability compile a list of universities to which you must send a letter requesting further information. At this stage, you can write to the selected 25-30 universities. You can directly request application materials from the universities. There are three ways to get application forms.

  1. Requesting Application Forms via email
  2. Requesting Application Forms via Air Mail
  3. Downloading from the university website
Documents Required For Admission
  1. Completed Application form
  2. Essay/s or writing sample

  4. Resume for MBA Students
  5. Official score reports of SAT/TOEFL/GRE/GMAT to be sent by ETS

  8. Two/Three Recommendation Letters from Professors or Employer
  9. Transcripts and Mark sheets from College or University

Recommendation Letters

Letter of reference or recommendation letter plays a very important role in the admission process especially for Master's and Doctoral courses. A recommendation letter is a signed statement from a person who knows you well professionally or has taught you in a subject that is related to the course you are applying to. It should list your positive and negative qualities, strengths and weaknesses, your character and integrity and other such information.

The author or teacher must indicate his position, how long he/she has known the applicant and in what capacity. He/she should briefly discuss the need, importance and usefulness of the study the applicant proposes to undertake. Authors are usually asked to rank applicants in their letters of recommendation, which helps admission officers to interpret the academic credentials of foreign students. Students should obtain letters of recommendation (often on the prescribed forms sent by the institutions) from teachers who know them as a person as well as a student. You may like to request your author to give concrete examples that may show your qualities and help your case.

Essays / Statement of Purpose

The personal essays, and/or statement of purpose, also play a very important role in the process of evaluating your application for both admission as well as financial aid because it gives the faculty, assessing your application, information about you as an individual. For MBA candidates this is probably the most important criterion. In the statement of purpose, which must be concise, the student must define his or her academic goals, and/or research plans. It should include justification for choosing the academic program and specialization, and for selecting the particular college as well as the advantages and benefit of studying that particular course.

Application Procedure

To study at a Canadian University, you must first be accepted in a program of study by a recognized Canadian university. Once you have determined which universities meet your needs, contact the registrar's office at each institution to obtain an application for a bachelor's program or a professional degree. If you wish to pursue postgraduate studies in Canada you may obtain more information by contacting the dean of graduate studies at the universities that interest you. It is important to apply early.

Generally, international students should apply to a Canadian university up to eight months in advance. Some universities have application deadlines as late as June for a September start date. Typical entry points for international students are the September and January semesters. However, many universities have adopted a procedure of "rolling admissions" which means that they consider international students' applications as they come in throughout the year.
However, for graduate programs in particular, it can take time to ensure you are matched with the right faculty adviser, so give yourself enough lead-time.

Calendars with course descriptions, admission requirements and procedures, costs and scholarships are available from the registrar at each university.

Engineering, optometry, medicine, veterinary medicine, law, and dentistry are fields where the first professional degree is considered an undergraduate program. Limited seats are available contingent on your academic merit. A high level of academic achievement is required for admission. Often at least two years of undergraduate study in a related field are required before you can be admitted to the first professional degree program. Check the university calendar to identify tests such as LSAT (law) or DAT (dentistry) that may also be required.

Visa

You will need to have a valid passport and a visa in order to enter Canada. Since it can take several months to obtain a passport and all the documentation, start the process as soon as you can. Here you will find information regarding Visa requirements and procedures.

Students Visa
The visa is a document that grants you permission to enter a country for a specified time frame for a specific reason. An applicant must convince the visa officer that he/she has "a permanent residence in India which he/she has no intention of abandoning." Each case is different, and what might serve as compelling evidence in one case may not work in another. Examples of circumstances, which applicants have presented as proof of return, include: a good job, significant property or financial holdings, family, school enrollment, a good social standing. That is fine, but one should not be surprised or angry if the officers are unable to review all the documents that are carried. Because officers are often pressed for time, they may not be able to look at many or even any documents. Also, officers are aware that documents may be counterfeited or altered, so they may be wary of accepting them. Therefore, one should also be prepared to explain (quickly) one's situation orally or to answer any questions by the interviewing officer.
